Cody Rhodes: “I could never root for AEW” in todays Wrestling news

Rhodes knows how important AEW to the industry is.

Cody Rhodes has never sided with AEW for a variety of reasons.

Rhodes was a founding father of AEW. He worked as a wrestler, and also as the executive vice president for the Tony Khan owned company. He left the promotion in 2022, and is now the top wrestler in WWE. Rhodes has said that he quit AEW due to a “personal matter,” but he has never given any details about the issue.

Rhodes was asked on the Tuesday episode of Cheap Heat if he still wants AEW’s success:

I am very careful with these questions because they are the most important ones that will be asked when this interview is released. I’ll admit: the narrative about my contributions to AEW changed a great deal, and this was very disappointing. I won’t mention their names because they know who they are, but there were a few people who tried to spread some propaganda when I left. In The Young Bucks book, there’s a line about me being the last person to sign. Matt and Nick [Jackson] and I are still as close as we’ve ever been. I am so grateful to have them in my life and career. If we’re being honest, AEW would not exist without me. It doesn’t. With that in mind I could never be against it. It’s just like having a child and they go to college, and they get a DUI, or they get into trouble… I’ll always feel that way for them.

It was a wound more painful and gaping than people realize. They look at the situation now and think, “Oh man, you are on top of the planet, you have it all.” They may not realize that I gave my all. I did. And, yes, I never could see a time when I would be against them.

Rhodes said that he understood the importance of AEW to the pro-wrestling industry, even if he had never worked for the promotion.

From a perspective completely outside of myself, my relationship with AEW, or anything else, my friends, the children I signed, people from my school… all that stuff. It’s important to keep them going from a distance. If that were to disappear, I don’t believe anyone in the locker rooms has any idea of the financial repercussions it would have on the wrestlers business. It would have a trickle-down affect on independent wrestling. We’ve created an environment where men and women can feed their families, make a good living and be treated at the level their global penetration demands. I’d hate to see this bubble burst. This is another random fear of mine, whether they are up or down. I would never, ever root against them. It’s not easy to do because you hear random things about you in press conferences. You should never mention my name or the name of my wife. Tony should have told. I won’t ever root against them. I’m not going to.

Rhodes became the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion at WrestleMania forty. His first title defence will be against AJ Styles this Saturday, May 4, at Backlash in Lyon. This is the first ever Rhodes vs. Styles battle.

Due to his title as a WWE Champion, Rhodes was ineligible to be selected for the 2024 WWE Draft. He remained on the SmackDown roster.
